Instagram bad for our youth?

Image
Kara Fox of CNN published an article titled "Instagram worst social media app for young people's mental health".  The article discusses the study #statusofmind conducted by researchers at UCLA's Brain Mapping Center who surveyed around 1,500 people aged 14 to 24.  The results found that Instagram had the most negative impact.  Behind it were Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter.  The researchers found that the negative impact was found most prominently in young women.  They say that the media platform causes young women to compare themselves against unrealistic ideals of what their reality should look like.  This causes them to feel that their bodies aren't good enough.  The photoshopped images create a feeling of "inadequacy and anxiety" as viewers develop a "fear of missing out".  As a response to this social media issue some are calling for social media platforms to take action by placing a warning on photoshopped images so that viewers don'

The Persuaders

In class this week I watched Frontline's documentary titled The Persuaders .  As our media expands the job of the advertising industry changes constantly.  The film discusses the new challenges that these companies face, and strategies they have come up with.  Although the film is outdated, some of the techniques mentioned are still being used today.  One example would be product placement in films and TV shows.  A few examples I can remember from my own viewing would be the Kardashians, and Jurassic World .  The Kardashians are the perfect example of product placement the whole show is based around their "life" but there are so many little things that are influenced my product placement: the phones they use, the shoes they wear etc.  The movie Jurassic World is similar.  The characters all use the same brand of cell phone, and drive the same brand of car.  It's pretty obvious that they are product placement when the shots make sure that you can see the brand.  The

A Comparison of Stories: CNN vs Fox News

The recent North Korea nuclear weapons scandal has sparked a media frenzy. The Fox News article titled "Trump to tell Kim no economic sanctions relief without denuclearization: report" is written by Lukas Mikelionis.  The topic is Trump putting pressure on Kim Jong Un, leader of North Korea, to dismantle North Korea's nuclear program.  Trump is portrayed as almost an american hero.  Someone who is relentless in getting what he asks for from the North Koreans.  This article seemed geared to his supporters.  It could be used as "evidence" that he is accomplishing what he promised to "protect" the United States.  The CNN  article is titled "Trump says US has not 'given up anything' in North Korea talks".  The article was written on the April 22, 2018 by Kate Sullivan.  The difference in titles already suggests the clash of opinions presented in the two articles.  The quote in the article brings an element of skepticism to Trumps state

Our Relationship to the Media

Image
The media has a rock relationship with its users.  It can be deceiving when it persuades you into buying things.  The media influences you constantly and you have to be on constant alert of appeals the media makes.  The media uses several different kinds of appeals to bring in people of different audiences in to purchase whatever product they are trying to sell.  They make you believe you “need something” to compel you to buy it. Because of the tricky deceptions the media uses the consumer relationship with the media is not a strong one.
