Trump and the Media

After reviewing the variety of different advertising techniques I went back to reflect to see if I could remember these applied in real life.  The one that stuck out the most is the 2016 Election. Donald Trump is a master of social media. I read an article from the Harvard Business Review talking about how Donald Trump uses big seed marketing techniques.  This technique aims to seed a message through masses of people. Before Election Day Donald Trump already had a mass following on Twitter, instagram, etc. With over millions of followers there was a large audience for Trump to reach out to.

Because Trump is limited to 140 characters I believe he makes his messages as provocative as he can.  His tweets spark media outlets to report on whatever crazy statement he has for his audience. The article states that his tweets “strike raw nerves, speaking boldly to themes that people struggle to work through: race, nationalism versus globalism, financial insecurity, status inequity, sexism, and more” (Bikart).  As an audience member I feel that this observation is completely accurate. I am also member of the various groups Trump has targeted with his tweets, and they have struck several nerves. I always have discussions about his current tweets with family and friends. The review states that these tweets make political opponents want to comment with a response to whatever he says.  From my own observations I believe this to be accurate, some of his tweets are so outrageous that you have to respond which sparks more conversation. The article mentions that he has received over 2 billion dollars in free air time.

Trump also reaches a variety of different audiences because of how “simple” his statements are. He simplified his statements so that everyone can understand, meaning that he doesn’t use big words that other politicians use to state strategies or explain their thoughts.  His audience knows exactly what he thinks, which appeals to all kinds of people, regardless of education levels because there is no confusion over where he stands on the issue at hand.

  1. I think that the topic of Trump and marketing/advertising techniques is very interesting. While almost everything he says and puts out is provocative and alienates at least on demographic, the debate is still to be had if it helps him in other areas, and if it works to his favor in at least one sense-- I wonder what we will see in the future.
